Quilting is for Everyone
Hi! I’m Sara Tallas, founder of Yes A Quilter. I’ve been crafting in one medium or another from a very young age, but none of them really seemed to stick. (I wish I had known that before I purchased all of the tools needed!) I discovered Quilting in 2014, and finally found my passion!
In the years that followed, I read blogs, devoured quilting magazines, watched tutorials, signed up for block and quilt swaps and made friends! I also experienced various forms of discrimination including ageism, racism, sexism and classism. Whenever I would go shopping for fabric in a local brick and mortar store, the other patrons and often the employees would question me in disbelief when I said “I’m a Quilter.” “YOU’RE a Quilter?!?!?”
YES. A QUILTER.
At the time, I was 34 years old. I also had long blonde hair with teal, purple and pink streaks. I have tattoos and visible piercings. I’m a little bit Goth, a little bit Rock n’ Roll. And I AM A QUILTER.
This discrimination kept me from seeking out and attending local guild meetings. It made me question the legitimacy of my art – was I even ALLOWED to call myself a Quilter??
Yes A Quilter was created to encourage other quilters to stand proudly in their craft and confidently proclaim “YES A QUILTER” whenever anyone dares to question the legitimacy of your creativity and passion ( even if you’re questioning yourself!)
